Description

hp-laserjet-enterprise-600-m602.33253301

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn is a fast mono laser for a busy workgroup, with great paper handling and a very low cost per page.

The M602dn measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a 4-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a 2-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.

The M602dn has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. It has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper built in. Additional paper-handling options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet 5-bin mailbox ($399). Maximum paper capacity is 3,600 sheets.

The M602dn is the middle model of HP’s M602 series. The M602n ($999 direct) lacks an automatic duplexer, while the M602x ($1,499 direct) includes the duplexer and adds an additional 500-sheet paper tray.

The M602dn provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Printing Speed
The M602dn’s rated print speed is 52 pages per minute, while the M603dn is rated at 62 pages per minute and the M601dn at 45 pages per minute. Unsurprisingly, the M602dn tested at a print speed in between those two models. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic’s hardware and software for timing), at an effective 14.1 pages per minute (ppm), while I clocked the M603dn at 14.5 ppm and the M601dn at 13.4 ppm on the same tests. (The rated speeds are based on text-only printing, while our test suite combines text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.) The OKI B730DN , rated at 55 pages per minute, tested a bit slower, at 12 ppm.

Output Quality
Overall, output quality was a bit below par, but still fine for general business use. Text quality was slightly subpar for a laser, but still suitable for most any business uses except for those requiring very small fonts.

The M602dn’s graphics quality was slightly subpar for a mono laser, good enough for typical business uses, though I’d hesitate to use it for reports I’d be handing to colleagues I was seeking to impress. It had trouble rendering differences in shading in certain figures. Some illustrations exhibited mild banding, a regular pattern of faint striations—an issue that I didn’t see with the other M600-series printers.

Photo quality was typical of mono lasers, good enough for printing out recognizable images from files or Web pages.

The M602dn shares the M603dn’s very low running costs (1.2 cents per page). The OKI B730DN’s cost per page is 1.4 cents, while the M601dn’s is 1.7 cents per page.

In price, speed, and duty cycle, the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602dn stands between two Editors’ Choice models in HP’s lineup, the M601dn and M603dn. It shares the M603dn’s very low cost per page and its keypad for secure, password-protected printing. It costs $300 more than the M601dn, but with a lower cost per page you’d make up the price difference after printing 60,000 pages. The M602dn’s output quality didn’t quite match the other two in our testing, but it is fine for most business needs. This model has a lot to offer, and is worth a close look by businesses looking for a fast mono laser for high-volume printing for a large workgroup.
