Access Windows PCs and Macs from Android

Google has finally launched it’s Chrome Remote Desktop app for Android, which allows a Mac and Windows user to control their machines from an Android tablet or smartphone. It’s a really cool and one of the easiest Remote Desktop tool which works great.

There is a lot of usage of such tool in the business and enterprise space, but it comes really handy for average users as well. You can control your PC/Mac when you are not home or in office. You can open any app remotely, including email client and send emails right from your phone. It’s also handy for support. So if your mom doesn’t know how to do a certain thing, you can remotely control her Mac or PC and show her how it’s done.

It’s very easy to use.

  1. Install the app from Play Store on your Android device.
  2. Install the web app on the Chrome browser of your PC or Mac.
  3. Open the Chrome app and follow instructions.
  4. Now you will see the Mac/PC on your Android device.

Tap on the device, enter the PIN and start controlling your PC or Mac from your phone.

Google Remote Desktop has been around since 2011, where a user was able to control one PC/Mac from other PC/Mac, now Google has brought that capability to Android as well.

No party for GNU/Linux

Everything looks rosy till this point, and that’s where the excitement end. If you are a GNU/Linux user you are not invited to Google’s parties any-more. Just like Google Drive, the Android maker is not offering Remote Desktop for Linux machines.

I really don’t understand Google’s disdain for Desktop Linux, especially when its Android and Chrome empire is erected on top of Linux.

I would very much like to say that Google may bring Remote Desktop to Linux, but looking at the situation of Google Drive and many other such services, I am not really hopeful. So, if you are a GNU/Linux user, you are pretty much on your own.

Google, will your please show some love to GNU/Linux users as well?
